Birthday Wishes

I've been a bit under the weather, to say the least. So I have two important things to say that are belated.

Happy 4th Birthday Joseph!!!!!
You are like sunshine in my life, always brightening my day. I know you're getting to be such a big boy, but you will always be my baby brother. Love you so much!!!

Happy Birthday Mom!!!!!!!!!!
To the greatest mother in the universe, I don't know what on earth I'd do without you. For starters, I wouldn't be here, but everyone knows that. People tell me I look like you, and I love hearing that. The whole world can know that of all the people I could aspire to be like, you're at the top of my list. You always point me to Jesus and His Word. By His grace, may I do the same for others.

Birthday Greetings

Happy 22nd Birthday Stephen!!!!!

In Which...

November. How is it already November?

Is it getting old? I do this every month, don't I? Well, most recently. Let's see...here and sort of here. OK, so not every month. But I'm thinking it nearly constantly. It's less than a month until Thanksgiving and the Event after that practically starts when Thanksgiving ends.

I have presents I need to work on! I felt better after I made some progress last weekend on one that was more involved. I'm not sure why I'm so worried. I'm only making a few presents this year. Like four or something. But I'm busier than I was the year I made 32 presents. Sort of. It's a different kind of busy.

The I'm-driving-all-over-the-place kind of busy. I'll drive for ten minutes. Stay home a few hours. Drive another ten minutes. Few more hours, probably taking a nap. (I love naps. One of my favorite pastimes.) Drive half-an-hour. All these little things aren't very involved, but add them together? I feel super busy. One day when I was journaling (that's totally a word, spellcheck!), I wrote that the only time I had to contemplate life so far that week, I just wanted to sleep. I often drive by myself in silence and just think, but it's not completely relaxing, because you have to pay attention to the other cars and where you're going. (Who knew?) Traffic is not really a peaceful place to reflect on deep things. Like life in general.

Mondays are truly busy though. The last two Mondays, I drove Stephen to work in the morning, went to work myself at around one o'clock (I'm working at the Severson's farm once a week on Monday afternoons, packing up oats or wheat or washing buckets or...), came back home at around six thirty, ate supper, went to choir, and came home and finished (well, started and finished) homework for the next day. Our closed form poetry was due today. So I stayed up until twelve writing poems last night. I had some other things to do too so I didn't get to bed until one. Unfortunately, that's not unusual. I think the earliest I ever went to bed this semester before I had to go to school the next day was around eleven. (Man, was that a long sentence!) And then I have to get up at 6 something. It's getting harder and harder to force myself out of bed in the mornings. Not that I don't want to go to school (only a couple times). I just don't want to get out of bed. To be honest, I never really do. That act of climbing out is the hardest part. Once I'm up, I'm up. I'm past the point of no return. Haha.

The long title of this post is In Which My Brain Leaks on to a Piece of Paper-Er, Computer Screen. (Sounds like the title of a poem. Maybe.) But I thought that was too long to put into the title space.

Yeah. I guess that's the mood I'm in.

Belated Birthday Greetings

Happy 13th Birthday Anna!!!!!!!

I can't believe you're thirteen. It's making me feel old!

And, sorry, it's late. But thanks for reminding me. ;)

Poetry

Most of this semester I've been sort of dreading the time when we would start writing poetry for creative writing. I like reading poetry, but I hate writing it.

That's what I thought anyways.

We've been talking about poetry for over a week now. We wrote haikus in class on Tuesday, and it was actually kind of fun. Here are the three I wrote in class:

Dandelion grows,
a bright sign of spring at last,
but then the bee stings.

A clear crisp breeze blows
through the leaves and my sweater,
the harsh wind biting.

White powder on trees,
the long thin branch breaks in two,
falling to the ground.

So we've been learning about kinds of poems. I was intrigued by the pantoum form. It repeats whole lines and is rather cyclic in nature. It made me think about how depression can be a vicious cycle. I can't count the number of times my brain has run around in circles, making me feel worse and worse. So I thought I'd try to write a pantoum poem about depression. After class, I sat on the concourse and wrote this poem. For fun! (Which I told Khyrstyn was kind of ironic since it's about depression.)

Those voices in my head, they say,
You will never be good enough.
The facts they give, I can't deny,
but I must fight the lies they hide.

You will never be good enough,
You have failed one too many times.
But I must fight the lies they hide,
buried deep, probing, I must find.

You have failed one too many times,
Again and again and again.
Buried deep, probing, I must find,
what's really true about myself.

Again and again and again,
I search and I grasp; I despair.
What's really true about myself:
I am loved, I am called, I'm His.

A Sweater and A Hat

I wanted to upload some in-progress shots of my Cubs postseason hat and I found a bunch of pictures I'd forgotten about. A couple weeks back, I got a few of Joseph in the sweater I made him-still fits, yay! There're not that great, but:
Katherine-bomb...

It's blurry, but I love this one.
Well, the Cubs lost tonight, but I have several inches of my hat done:
Here's a dorky picture of me with needles sticking out of my head-sort of. Josiah said that I look dopey. Thanks!

Things of October

I gave in. I wore the hat.

This is how it went down. Last night, as I finished up my homework (well, worked on it-I finished it this morning before class), I thought about what I was going to wear to school the next day. Girls do this a lot. (OK, maybe guys do too.) I don't always. Sometimes it's 6 something early and I wish I didn't have to get out of bed, and I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO WEAR. (The screaming bit only happened once this semester. So far.) But this time, I was thinking ahead. This usually includes thinking about my hair. Sometimes I have to base my whole outfit on this factor. Because oftentimes hair is frizzy, limp, greasy, or in some way unacceptable for the general population to see. Without a headband or hat, that is. I was kind of sick of wearing headbands to deal with this problem. I didn't want to wear that hat. Or the other one. So, what the heck? Why not wear the snowflake one? So I did. No one made any comments. Except Julia. After I brought it to her attention that I was wearing snowflakes in the fall (!), she tried to grab it off my head. Five minutes later, she said, "Rebekah, you can't wear that hat!" And when someone who is twelve years younger than me tells me what I can and can't do, I usually sass them back. "You can't tell me what to do!" Especially if they are only six.

And after all this, after I caved and wore the snowflake hat (though not in September, thank goodness), I decided this afternoon that I might as well just start another slouchy hat for myself right now. I'm not really knitting anything else right now (as in, I haven't been actually working on anything in the last few weeks), so it's not like it would be cutting into my other projects' time. (Since I'm not giving them any time at all. I'm not sure if there is any true logic involved in this thought process...) And I thought I would somehow relate this hat to the Cubs. This is what I decided. I started my Cubs postseason hat. I will knit this hat during the postseason. That way, when I wear it, I can look back and say, "I knit this hat when the Cubs won the World Series!!!!" And if less-favorable events occur, I can say, "I knit this hat when the Cubs were in the playoffs and even though they lost, I will wear this hat proudly because I am a true Cubs fan! A die-hard! I'm with them, win or lose!!"

Go Cubs!!!!!!

We beat the Cardinals and we can beat everyone else too!!!!

Cubs Win!!!!!!!!

Now I have to go finish my short story that's due tomorrow....

Before the Month Ends

I don't mean to scare you all but there are only three. months. left. in 2015. Today is the last day of September! Ahhhhh....

Since it's the last day of September I decided to finally finish my paper. I told myself a month or so ago that I could buy some yarn once I finished it. And it still didn't get done until now. Yeouch. The yarn is for somebody's Christmas present, and I thought I better get started on it. That's the main reason I finished the paper today. (Instead of two months later, I guess.) You should be proud of me. This is the first time I've bought yarn since last November. I mean, I've acquired some since then, but I didn't pay for any of it.

Now I'm sitting here wondering what else I'm going to write about...what have I been up to?

Well, there's always school. It's still going great, I'm really enjoying it! Our class was cancelled yesterday though, which was sad. The plot outline for a short story is due tomorrow. I don't think I've ever written an outline for a story. I don't know where my stories are going until they get there. I like it that way. But I have to do it anyway... It's the poetry I'm really dreading. Except for the fact that I haven't let myself think about it yet. Not for a month or so...I shouldn't worry about it right now.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. started last night! It's in its third season now and we've been watching it from the beginning. It's hard to tell how good this season will be since we've only seen one episode, but I'm still excited about it. As the weeks go by, we'll see. I will probably stick with it no matter what just because I love the characters.

At The Moment

I'm lying down on Khyrstyn's bed with my head propped against the pillow (and with the way I did my hair it's somewhat uncomfortable) and underneath a warm, fuzzy blanket. It's a bit warm for that, but when I take it off I get kind of cold, and I like the cozy feeling that being under covers makes me feel. And I'm drinking out of a water bottle which can prove quite problematic when you're basically lying flat on your back. Don't worry, I only spilled it on my face. And my face dries.

I spent the last half hour looking at hat patterns on Ravelry. I want to make myself a slouchy hat. I have my Midnight Fog hat, which I love, but I don't feel like I can wear a snowflake hat in September. Maybe October (though I don't want it to snow in October, by any means), but I don't think September is right. Not that it really matters much since I probably won't knit this hat until after it snows anyway. I might push it off until it's too hot to wear hats-who knows? But it was an enjoyable half an hour of looking at hat patterns.

(I was going to add a picture of my snowflake slouchy hat for good measure, but Khyrstyn's laptop apparently doesn't want to let me. I might add it later...)

Ta-da!

Miracle Birthday

Happy 11th Birthday Mary Ann!!!!!

Yesterday was Mary Ann's eleventh birthday-eleven years since God blessed us with the gift of Mary Ann. I was only seven when she was born. I didn't fully realize the seriousness of the situation when she was in the hospital. But now that I'm older I look back (often with tears) and praise God for his grace and mercy. For his gift of life.

For Mary Ann.

Her birthday three years ago...
I stole this picture from a two-year-old post on Katherine's blog.
She's still quite the Bears fan.
So cute!
I found this picture on the computer and I just had to post it. All that cuteness!
I can't seem to find any recent pictures of her, but these are all so cute that I don't think I need to worry about it. :)

Writing I Can't Ignore

This has been happening to me more recently than ever before. I'm reading along in a book and I reach a place where I have to stop and write down a certain section or quote. The words and the way the writer put them together just grab me in a way that I can't ignore.

Here are two such quotes that I read in my Creative Writing textbook this last week or so:

"The instruction we find in books is like fire. We fetch it from our neighbors, kindle it at home, communicate it to others, and it becomes the property of all." ~ Voltaire

"The book is a thing in itself, and it is not me. There is no ego in it. I am glad that you sense that while I am in it and of it, I am not the book. It is much more than I am. The pictures have come to me out of some hugeness and sometimes they have startled me. But I am glad of them." ~ John Steinbeck

Grown-Up Sister

It's fun being a big sister with a driver's license and not too many demands on my time. I was the assigned breakfast maker today. But last night, I decided that it would be more fun to drive to Dunkin' Donuts at seven in the morning and buy pumpkin munchkins instead of making something lame like oatmeal.

So when Mom woke me up at seven this morning, I started a donation drive for munchkins that was somewhat successful (Thanks Mom, Katherine, and Anna!). That's okay-the Shorts gave me a Dunkin' Donuts gift card for my graduation-munchkins on me! Katherine wanted to go with me, so we left at 7:30 for Dunkin' Donuts (when breakfast is technically supposed to be done). I bought 25 chocolate munchkins and 25 pumpkin munchkins. And then I bought a pumpkin swirl iced coffee for me. It's hard to go to Dunkin' Donuts without getting a drink of some kind. (#$1smoothiesonMondays! Too bad I missed it this week, but Johnathan made banana bread and then Mom made Tres Leche Cake. Anyways...)

After we had our munchkins, I started the bread for lunch. (Somehow I got stuck making breakfast, lunch, and dinner today. Well, I didn't do a lot of work for breakfast.) And filled up the soap in the kitchen. Then I drove Stephen to work, picked up some eggs and milk at Aldi, and drove back home. Since then, I've loaded the dishwasher, wiped off half the table, swept the kitchen floor, and now I'm blogging. I'll have to get off soon to start the eggs boiling for egg salad. I just took the Belgian molasses bread out of the bread machine; egg salad on Belgian molasses bread is one of the best combinations in the world.

Lest any of you reading this are freaking out about me calling myself grown-up, rest assured. It made for a nice title, and I am eighteen, so technically, I'm an adult. But I don't think of myself as a grown-up. I know I'm growing up, but haven't I been doing that since I was born? I think I want to always be growing up. Growing up entails learning more about yourself, others, and the world around you. Don't I want to be doing that for the rest of my life? Besides, I'm not sure I ever want to be a grown-up. Being an adult is fine with me. But I always want to be somewhat of a kid at heart.

Happy September!!!

How the heck is it already September? This year has gone by way. too. fast.

But I'm glad that it's September. Fall is my favorite season. I know I've talked about this before, but I could mention it every autumn. I know it was hot today, but last week it was cooler, and I can begin to imagine the beautiful fall weather that I love. One of my favorite things in the world is lying under the covers with the window open, feeling the cool breezes blow across my face. I think if I could live my whole life like that, I would. Of course, then it wouldn't be so special.

Then there's all the bundling up. Sweaters, socks, mitts, everything. I'm a knitter. I live for these things. I've been spending the last few weeks imagining all the sweaters I'm going to knit (and the shawls...), and how I'm going to put them together with this outfit and that outfit. Yeah, I've been thinking about sweaters in the dog days of summer. I can't help it. I'm a knitter. It's like it's ingrained in my being. I think about wool all. year. round. And oftentimes, I knit with it all year round. I'm a knitter. That's how I roll.

Crazy Things

I can't believe that I never mentioned the youth group bike trip that we took a month ago. We rode 17 miles, mostly along the I&M canal, and quite a bit of it was spent in the pouring rain. We were all soaked by the end of the trip, and I mean truly soaked. I really enjoyed the rain-it made it more of an adventure.

This was probably the craziest thing I did all summer, and perhaps the craziest thing I've done in a while. (I don't know, I can be pretty insane sometimes.) Pretty much anyone who reads this blog knows me and knows that I am not a big fan of this thing we call "exercise". I'm a fan of sitting in a comfy chair, reading a good book or knitting, and, in my lower moments, wasting time on the internet. (Particularly Pinterest and Ravelry, but who really cares except me. Also, are "lower moments" even a thing? I'm not sure they're bad enough to be called "lowest moments".) Considering this fact, I am not in great shape. And that might be an understatement. So doing a 17 mile bike ride when I hadn't seriously rode a bike in a couple years could definitely be classified in the the "crazy" or "insane" category. Suffice to say, I was pretty much exhausted after the first few miles. Say, two or three. If you've noticed, 17 contains a lot of twos or threes. 8.50 to 5.66, to be precise. (Sometimes I wonder if my math nerdy-ness comes out more when I'm slap-happy. I don't see much logic in that, but you can't fight the evidence.) It's practically a miracle that I survived this bike trip. Though I was sore for five days afterwards... I guess it just proves how much the human body can endure. Or it proves how incredibly perseverant, determined, and awesome I am. Take your pick.

The reason I brought this whole thing up (besides to entertain myself and hopefully some of you) is because our youth group just went hiking today. Thankfully, we did not hike for 17 miles. But we did walk for a couple hours and quite a few of us climbed some cool rock formations. And while many times in my life I would not have joined in on such shenanigans, today I did. I got mud on my hands, on my shoes, on my shirt, maybe even on my face. And I had a blast. I was exhausted, huffing and puffing up the stairs in the park, but I had fun. I will be sore tomorrow, but it was totally worth it.

I think life is better when you do the crazy things.

Surprises

I'm not sure what to title this post as there is quite a lot to say, but I guess I'll figure it out by the end. :)

Well, I've finished my first week of classes! (Can I say that if I'm only taking one class? Creative Writing, if I haven't told you yet. Josiah and I are taking it together!) Finished them on Thursday, but you know...
I was definitely nervous going in, but now that I kind of know what to expect, I'm excited! I know it will be challenging and stretching, but I think it will be fun too. It's already been fun, especially being in a class with Josiah. :) I've also enjoyed meeting some of Josiah's friends, putting faces to people I've been hearing about (for years :). Of course, I've met less than twenty, so I've only scratched the surface. ;) And we've had no less than five people say we look so alike. I think someone called me the "female Josiah", haha.

One of the most terrifying things about this whole college thing is that Josiah has a class before Creative Writing. Which means I am alone for a couple hours. Growing up with ten siblings (gradually, I guess), I've never been alone very often. And I've hardly ever gone anywhere else alone. There's always someone to talk to, someone to fall back on. Walking down the concourse by myself was kind of scary. But I thought about the fact that all these people are a lot like me. Quite a few of them are my age. Which seems crazy, since it's hard to convince myself, that yes, I am old enough to be a college student. Rebekah, you are a college student!

I've definitely enjoyed the pop tarts and frozen yogurt. Early Thursday morning, just as I had finished making myself a pb&j sandwich, Josiah said, "You know they're giving out free food today, right?" Oh. I had a walking taco for lunch. But pb&j sandwiches make good 3:30pm snacks too. After our class, I stayed an hour longer than I was planning to (a pretty loose plan), because I was having fun hanging out. I didn't exactly expect that. I knew I would meet people. It's pretty impossible to walk around school with Josiah and not meet people. If we walk around for ten minutes and he doesn't say "hi" to anyone, I start to worry. I'm kind of surprised that I didn't expect to have fun hanging out with people at college. I mean, I love hanging out with people in general. I love people. And, I'm "Josiah's sister". I shouldn't have been surprised.

Toto, I'm not in High School Anymore

Well, I graduated on Saturday. And I didn't finish my paper in time, but Mom and Dad let me graduate anyway, and they didn't send anyone away. :)

It was an awesome party! We had great food (brownie sundaes for the win!), and some of us played Ultimate Frisbee afterwards. And my team won. Which is good, because it was my party, and I'm not sure what would have happened if I hadn't won. I was getting a bit fierce with my smack-talk...it was quite a close game. But most of all, there were great people there. I am so thankful for each one of them, I love them all, and I was so happy that they were there to celebrate with me. But there were many people who I would have loved to be there who couldn't. :(

I definitely felt like an adult today, this first Monday after I graduated. This is because:

  1. Mom and I had a discussion about what I would be doing around the house-now that I've graduated and I'm only taking one class and I'm not working anywhere. After hearing her list, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about life; I wasn't sure how much she would be making me do. :) Some of the things were driving people around (work for Stephen and Josiah, behind the wheel for Katherine) and reading books to the little kids. I'd do that over cleaning the bathroom any day of the week. But I am "adult" enough to know that some sort of mental breakdown will happen this semester (probably involving school). I may be an optimist, but I've lived long enough to be (somewhat of) a realist.
  2. I drove Josiah to work. I've done this before, but with the combination of everything else, I felt like I should include it. I picked him up too-even though I was tired of driving around.
  3. After lunch (and after I worked on the infamous paper), I took the car keys and left my home to do some errands. By myself. I went to the bank and Walgreen's, but they didn't have any thank-you cards that I could see.
  4. So I went to Walmart. I felt pretty adult-ish doing this. All by myself in Walmart. Walmart's a big place, people. And I found the most perfect thank-you cards ever. They were made for me. One word-chevrons. Plus, they're navy and coral and lime green... I should probably wait until people get them, but I just can't wait to share their awesomeness.
  5. I stopped at Dunkin' Donuts for a smoothie. DD Perks members get $1 smoothies on Mondays after 2pm. Josiah took my order in the drive-thru, and when I got to the window, he said, "I didn't recognize your voice!" I recognized his, of course, and told him so. :)
  6. I drank my smoothie as I drove to pick Dad up from work. I don't think I've ever eaten or drank anything while I was driving on the interstate before. It's definitely an adult-ish thing to do. Whether it's completely wise or not is a different question. I felt fine doing it, mostly. I was completely in control of the vehicle while I was doing it.
  7. I wrote some thank-you cards while I was waiting for Dad. I got to JJC around 15 minutes before he actually got off. He drove home though, which I was glad about. We picked up Stephen and had to wait a little bit for him too, so I got even more thank-you cards done.
Thanks for reading! ;)

The Picture of Procrastination

I could have had this paper finished in June. (Sort of...I switched topics somewhere around that time.) But I'm quite proficient at procrastinating now. It's the major thing I mastered during my senior year of high school. Not that I had much trouble with it before then...

So I'm graduating tomorrow and I'm still working on this paper on the themes of sisters, sarcasm, and scandal in Jane Austen's novels. (Particularly, Emma, Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility, my three favorites) I decided to take a few "writing-papers-selfies" earlier. More procrastination. And write this post. Even more procrastination.

Since taking these pictures, I've written nearly 400 words and two paragraphs. I still have about half of my paper left. I'm not sure if I'll be able to do this-we don't have much food to snack on. And it's hard to write a paper without proper sustenance. I mean, I could really use a package of Oreos or Cheetos right about now. I had some mocha coffee earlier, which was nice (except I wasn't working on my paper while I was drinking it), but munchies go better with paper writing.

I did find a random piece of marzipan Stollen in the freezer that had my name on it. (No, seriously, it was in a bag that said "REW". I can't prove it without pulling it out of the trash though, so you'll just have to take my word for it.) Good thing I ate it now. It was only tolerable. I'd hate to have left it until it was unpalatable. What a waste of good Stollen.

It was a rather small piece unfortunately. :( There must be something else I can scrounge up.

I really should get back to writing...

Eight is Great

Happy 8th Birthday Kristian!!!!!

Monday, August 3, 2015

Yay!!!!!

Just a few minutes ago...okay, more like ten or fifteen...I finished Stewardship, the math course I was taking. I have now finished all the math I need to graduate!

Woo-hoo!!!!!!!

Now I just have to write that paper and do the study guide for that science module and take the test and then do two more modules and then do all those five experiments and, worst of all, do write-ups for those five experiments. In case you were wondering, I HATE experiment write-ups. One of the worst. school. assignments. ever. I don't like experiments because of the write-ups. Experiments have the potential to be fun, but they are ruined by the write-ups. OK, I'll stop complaining.

I have to finish all that before 3pm on August 22. That's my graduation party. If I don't finish by then, Mom and Dad are going to have to send anyone who comes back home.

So, obviously, it's going to get done.

It's Somebody's Birthday

Happy 20th Birthday Josiah!!!!

Not only are you my brother, but one of my best friends! I am so thankful to God for you and for the things he has used to draw us closer together and closer to Him.

I am now the only teenager-adult in this house...well, until Katherine turns 18, but then I'll only have a few months until I turn 20. I'm not sure why I'm talking about this since it sort of freaks me out. Maybe because Josiah turning 20 wasn't really freaky to me?

Birthday Greetings

Happy Belated Birthday Sharyssa!!!!

I know that you said you didn't really think much about your birthday now that you're so old (19-gasp! :D ), but I wanted to wish you happy birthday anyway. I'm so glad that God gave you to me as a friend and I can't imagine my life without you! You're such a blessing to me!

I Passed!!!!

After two hours waiting around, plus witnessing a garbage truck "on fire" (there was something in the truck on fire, and Dad said the paint was melting), I have my driver's license. Whoopee!!!!!!

Anna's taking me out to lunch once she gets back from Walgreen's. I'm driving and she's paying. :) Several others want to do this with me. Man, it pays to get your license!!

The classic game of "roll-the-ball-along-the-floor".
Well-loved classics.
I'm writing an essay on themes in all three books. I haven't written one word yet. :/
Joseph saw me taking picture of the books and said, "Take a picture of me!"

Plus, a picture of Katherine and me celebrating before we left for Worldview. Camp was awesome again, and it was so much fun to have Katherine be there with me!

Delightfully Cozy Quotes

About a month ago, I was reading the Betsy-Tacy Series. (Delightfully cozy books, I must say...) There were a few quotes that I had to write down because I loved them so much. I thought about sharing them then, but I just didn't get to it.

"Tony didn't answer and her words lingered in the air as words do sometimes, taking on undue significance by reason of the fact that they are left suspended."

"Miss Cobb struck a note and said, as she had said in previous years to Julia and Betsy, "This is Middle C." Betsy liked that. She always liked things to go on as they had gone before."
~Betsy and Joe by Maud Hart Lovelace.

A Confession

From the pages of my journal:

~March 10, 2015~
I learned a valuable lesson today. Frozen cream-cheese frosting tastes terrible. You wouldn't think it would, but it's kind of gummy and definitely nasty. I wouldn't be saying this except for the fact that I want to remember this lesson, but I can't tell anyone about it. No one knows that I ate frozen cream cheese frosting today. And they can't find out. Because this frosting was on a piece of apple cake that was in my carb stash in the freezer. I'm still not supposed to have carbs, but I've been having some. [...] That's no secret. Believe me, if you're supposed to be on a strict diet in my house, people watch what you're eating. "Hey, you're not supposed to have that!" My siblings are worse than my parents. But if they all knew that the carbs around the house that I've been "sneaking" wasn't enough for me...and that I'm eating out of my freezer stash that I've been saving for when I can "officially" have carbs again... [...] My stash is dwindling, guys. Of course, there are certain things that will be in there until the "official" date, because it's pretty hard (and messy) to sneak cake/pudding/stuff, ice cream dessert, or berry cobbler into your pocket [...]. But, cookies, brownies, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and yes, the occasional slice of apple cake with disgusting frosting (it was wrapped in plastic wrap, which was how I managed the no mess thing), not so difficult. And that is how I learned to stay away from frozen cream-cheese frosting. Blech!

About Stories (By My 12-Year-Old Self)

Today I have a special guest post to share with us, from my 12-year-old self. I read this a few weeks ago from one of my old journals and it reminded me so much of my I Live For Stories post a few months ago (?!?! Wait, March?! No way! I'm losing 2015...it's slipping through my fingers...), that I had to share it with all of you. Or just because I felt like it. Whatevs.

I'm repeating this word for word, comma for comma, exclamation point for exclamation point. Even at the end. Yes, I wrote that many exclamation points in my journal. 42, to be exact. You don't have to count them. Oh, and I couldn't help adding some notes to the end of it...

~August 27, 2009~
Alas, today I have finished the last books of two beloved series', Anne of Green Gables- (8 books) and Elsie Dinsmore (Travilla)- (28 books)1 I feel as if I've accomplished something, but the stories have ended, there is no more. I can imagine more to the stories, but it is not the same. I shall miss all the characters dreadfully, among my favorites, Opiniated Susan, of Anne of Green Gables, and lively tempered, Lucilla, from Elsie. I don't think I can express in words how sorry I am to leave them. I may go back, and live with them again, but, Alas!2, the story will always end in the same place.

I'm sort of heartbroken.3 The stories end just as if there was another book but Oh! there isn't. The stories could have just gone on and on but, Alas! every story must end.

My life is a story too and someday here on this earth, my story, as others, will end. But in heaven it will go on forever, it will never end, and I shall never cease to praise my heavenly father. Oh! I cannot wait until then, when I will be carried away to my rightful home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1Where's the period for that sentence? Even my 12-year-old self should know better...
2I must have really liked the word "alas!". I used it three times.
3Is that a real thing? How can one be "sort of" heartbroken? Is that like "mostly dead"?

I think I'm enjoying making fun of my younger self a little too much. I shall have to do it again sometime. MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! (That's four exclamation points. Count 'em.)

An Open Letter

July 11, 2015
My Dear Blog,

I wanted-I needed-to write you a letter and tell you how I feel. I'm sorry, so dreadfully sorry for the way I've been treating you these past few months. I've let things come between us. Things like wasting time on Pinterest, taking naps (I was tired, but...I don't think that the best excuse ever), reading millions of books, playing with my siblings, investing in other relationships, and perhaps worst of all, writing in my journal. I apologize. I wish I could make you understand how sorry I am. It was wrong of me. I took you for granted. I didn't consider your feelings as much as I should have. Especially after what I said in that post celebrating your 5th birthday and about how I felt about you, it was unusually cruel. (Besides the fact that it was nearly a month late!) After all that I've done, I can only beg and plead you to forgive me.

I'm aware that this will probably happen again. There will be times when our relationship is strained. Times where we don't spend a lot of time together. Times where I will put other things first. And I want you to know that even if, even when, that happens, I will always love you. There will always be a place in my heart for you, my dear blog.

Ever yours, through thick and thin,

Rebekah Evelyn White

P.S. And now that I think about it, I believe I owe a letter to my knitting as well...

P.P.S Please don't judge me for writing this at such a late (early?) hour. I could suppress my feelings no longer.

A Trip to the Mall

Katherine had birthday money that was burning a hole in her pocket, so she asked Grandma B to take her to...the mall. Where else do you go when your pockets are burning? Since Katherine loves me so much, she invited me to come along. Whoop!! I love going to the mall with Grandma and Katherine. We all actually like to shop. Besides, when you have fallen so far behind in school that you don't know what to do with yourself, spending a whole precious day at the mall is just the push you need to finish, right? ::ahem::

So I didn't get any school done yesterday (except for reading the instructions for a Stewardship lesson, which took me fifteen minutes at the most). That's okay. I came away from the mall with the cutest pair of earrings that I'm convinced were made for me (aqua and chevrons, people!), silver hoop earrings that I've been wanting for a while, and an adorable long necklace (with an Eiffel Tower charm, as well as a cute rose among others) that Katherine found. I promised she could wear it sometime. But more importantly, I have the time spent with Grandma and Katherine. Priceless.

More on May

I sort of promised to write more about what happened in the last few weeks. Is it bad that I think I need the calendar to remember? I will exercise my mind and try to write without a peek at it.

Some of us went to see some friends (Clare and Emma, to name a few) in Spotlight's A Year With Frog and Toad. What a cute show! I've loved the Cookies song from it for five years. It took a lot of self-control to not belt it out with the cast.

Hands down, the Bittersweet Event of the Month award goes to Sharyssa's show Tarzan. She played the part of Tarzan's human mother. It was different to watch her in such an emotional role; nothing like The Wicked Witch of the West or Miss Hannigan. But she did great, as always! This was her last Spotlight show. It has been such a joy to see her grow and mature over the last few years in her incredible talent for theatre. (Do you prefer that spelling, dahling?) And she went out with a bang. It was a great musical with fun costumes, impressive choreography, and plenty of emotional moments. I cried several times during the show, and I usually don't cry at musicals or plays. When the lights went off, I had one thought, "This is the end." (Rather melodramatic, I know. I think she's rubbed off on me.) I started to bawl like a baby. Two minutes later, when the lights went back on, there were tears all over my face and I felt like an emotional mess. In the best possible way, of course. I turned to Anna and moaned, "I need a hug..." I'll let you know how I feel when she goes on Broadway... :)

On a rather different note, church softball season has started. Dad, Mom, Stephen, Josiah, Katherine, and Johnathan are playing this year. It's Johnathan's first season and he's doing great. (Surprise, surprise...) They've only played two games so far, a double-header a few weeks ago. We got whupped. As an adoring fan, I feel like it's my right to include myself in that statement. Win or lose, I'm with them.

I suppose this is as good a time as ever to mention how excited I am for the Chicago Cubs this year!!! They are doing pretty well, and it's leading me to believe that This Is The Year!!!! But I'm not so idealistic that I can't add this: If not, I will still be a loyal fan. With the Cubs you're either a die-hard fan or nothing at all. My opinion, of course.

On May 22, we went down to the Baffa's to spend the afternoon and watch Susannah perform in The Gondoliers. She did a lovely job as part of the chorus and even had a dance solo!! I was so proud... :)

My Blog is Five!!!!!

One of the most disappointing things about May was that I came down with a cold the day that this blog turned five, May 11, 2015. I felt so miserable that I did not want to get out of bed to blog about it. (It was a particularly bad cold.) The last few times I've posted since then, I forgot about the whole thing. But I feel like it deserves special mention.

5 years. Five.

One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Years.

When you're only [almost] eighteen, five years is a long time. I was twelve when I started this blog. A lot can happen between the years of twelve-going-on-thirteen and seventeen-going-on-eighteen. And, believe me, it has!

In the weeks leading up to this momentous occasion (that happened several weeks ago without celebration), Josiah joked, "Your baby is turning five!" And he laughed, of course.

But I stopped him, "It does sort of feel like that! I mean, I've put a lot of work into it." Obviously, not as much as one puts into an actual baby.

But still...

Happy Belated 5th Birthday to My Beautiful Blog!!!

May you continue to document my life for 5 more years, and many more 5-more-years after that!!!!!

This is probably the sappiest post I have ever written...well, maybe just the least socially acceptable sappy post.

The End [of May] Draws Near

I was thinking about how soon May will be over. (Actually, I've been thinking about that a lot...) I realized that if I was going to blog anymore during May, I would have to do it today. Tomorrow is Sunday, and I don't like to go online on Sundays if I can help myself. Besides, we're going to be pretty busy tomorrow. So tonight is my only chance. I'm supposed to be in bed by eleven...we'll see how much blogging I can get done between now and then. Especially considering the fact that I am on the computer and will surely be distracted by something else.

::goes to check other tab::

Ten minutes later...

May has been busy, but not busy, at the same time. Life is full of conundrums. I came down with a cold a couple of weeks ago and fell behind in school. I am easily overwhelmed, which means that once I fell behind I was too overwhelmed to continue. I still haven't caught up. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever graduate...

But that is better than not wanting to graduate, which were my feelings at some points over the last few weeks. It's kind of scary not knowing what's coming ahead. Four years ago, I knew I would be at home doing high school for several years. The same was true three years ago, as well as two; and last year, I knew I would have one more year. While I know that I'm still going to be at home, it is rather frightening to not know exactly what lies ahead. I wouldn't say that I'm a control freak (who does?), but I do like being in control and I take pride in being "in the know". Still, the unknown can be exciting as well. What did I say? Life is full of conundrums.

I do have more to say, but as it is past eleven, I think I should wrap it up. Maybe I will share a little more about May in June.

Random Thoughts

"Happy May!"

...I wrote a couple weeks ago. Now that May is almost over, I thought I should blog some more before it passes me by. Most of me wants to run over to Pinterest (I'll blog later), but I'm fighting the urge. Just. keep. typing. Stay strong.

I failed.

I think I'll have to blog again later.........

Happy May!

Is it May already? That means the year is a quarter of the way over! That's crazy. 2015 is going by waaay too fast for me. I think it's because this is my last half year of being a high school student and a kid. I'm going to be an adult in about two months. Gah!!

I celebrated the beginning of May by making cupcakes. Okay, not really. Dad bought a chocolate espresso cupcake mix at Aldi last week and I've been meaning to make them ever since then. Today (finally) the opportunity presented itself. They were quite good. And I think I like baking more than I thought I did. It's important that it's something that I actually want to do versus having to do it. And I think I like baking more than cooking. Maybe because baking involves sweet things like cookies, brownies, cupcakes...all that good stuff.

I actually did some school today. I hadn't done any yet this week. :( Rebekah, you're trying to graduate before June. If you don't do school, it's not going to happen. I can be so dense sometimes.

My First 5K!!!!!

Last night, nine of us participated in the Presence Covenant Medical Center Illinois 5K Run/Walk (I read that off my race T-shirt) down in Champaign-Urbana. Six of our family ran last year.

Mary Ann, Grandt, and I were newbies this year. And Grandt beat Mom and Anna! Mary Ann and I were the last of our family. I beat her by a second. When we got to the stadium entrance, we both started running until we got to the finish line. Mary Ann said she only ran because she had to go to the bathroom... She asked me about stopping somewhere between the first and second mile, but I wanted to keep going. She survived. :)

Mary Ann and I walked most of the race together. Grandt and Katherine ran ahead of us and Mom and Anna stuck together ahead of us too.

My feet hurt pretty much the whole time, and my legs started hurting after the first turn. So I fake-jogged part of the time because that hurt less. They stopped hurting eventually, which was kind of strange.

One of my favorite parts (besides the food :) ) was all the people along the route cheering us on. Mary Ann said, "I couldn't have done it without all the people cheering."

Dad asked if I would ever do it again. "Oh yes!"

I think if I trained, I could probably do a 10K...

The Last Few Weeks

Wow, it has been too long since I blogged! Happy April everybody! Even though it's almost over. But if I don't post something in April, it will be the first month since I started my blog that I failed to post something. I find that pretty amazing. Oh, and this blog turns five in a few weeks!!!!! Crazy...

So, what's happened in the last few weeks...

Well, one big thing happened. I took the ACT last Saturday. I spent at least a week freaking out about it and living in the worlds of books so I wouldn't think about it. (And consequently getting nothing else done.) But it is OVER and I am so, so glad!!! Plus, I'm happy with how I did, so that's good too.

But it's been so long that they are several other "big" things that occurred.

On March 24 we celebrated Grandma B's 70th birthday with the uncles and aunts and cousins. And we got to see Uncle Chris for the first time in a couple years!

That next Monday we all went down to see the Baffas, and spent the night. We hadn't really seen them in a while and it had been over a year since we were at their house. We had a great, encouraging time!!

Grandma and Grandpa picked Josiah, Johnathan, and I up from the Baffa's house, and we spent the rest of the week at their house, cleaning (I washed the beautiful cherry cabinets) and eating lots of good food, and lots of junk food as well. But the highlight was the prairie burn. Josiah and Johnathan both helped out and I stood back and took pictures. I might post some later.

On Easter, Josiah, Katherine, and I all sang in the choir. We played chimes with one of our songs too, and my chime was the first note! And Mom played trombone along with that song as well. Then we went to Grandpa Kuhr's for Easter dinner, which was delicious.

The next day, Sharyssa, Khyrstyn, Kylee, Susannah, and I surprised Katherine for her 16th birthday (which is tomorrow). She came downstairs in the morning and we were all hiding in the corner. We all dressed up in "costumes" from different eras and Katherine did all our hair. Then we had a photo shoot down by the bridge by the canal. (Where Mrs. Greene took the pictures for my shawl pattern.) I'll have to post some of those later too. Afterwards, we had a picnic and just hung out until people had to leave.

As for some more "little" things:
  • I beat Grandt, Anna, and Johnathan at some sort of PIG or HORSE on Sunday. I was quite proud of myself.
  • Katherine, Anna, and I went to the zoo with Mrs. Short, Khyrstyn, and Bella last Tuesday. We had a lot of fun. And we got to ride the carousel twice, which is my favorite thing to do at the zoo. :)

I Live for Stories

I've been crying a lot lately. It's not a bad thing; it isn't anyone else's fault. I'm just really good at becoming emotionally invested in...you guessed it...

Stories.

First it was Cinderella-the new one that just came out. Katherine and I went to see it with our friends on Sunday. I loved it. And I cried three times, at one point the tears were falling down my face-I love that feeling! Twice because it was sad, yet beautiful, and once because, I'll admit it, it was romantic and beautiful. I sometimes cry out of happiness even more than out of sadness.

Katherine and I started reading The Hunger Games last week. We both finished the trilogy yesterday. I'm sure we would have finished it faster except that we had to wait for the books to be available at the library. It was rough. But I didn't cry because of waiting. I cried while reading. The first book made me hurt inside. Those times when can't quite cry, but your heart is aching. I love that feeling too. There was a point in the third book where I started moaning; I'm pretty sure that's not the right word. I probably sounded like a sick, dying puppy. While Anna looked at me and kept saying, "Stop. Just stop." But at the end of the book I cried. Oh, yes, I cried. Tears down my face and all. I had to stop reading because my tears were blurring my vision too much.

It was beautiful.

Stories.

I've always loved stories. I remember begging for stories from countless people over the years. Every time I heard someone mention anything about a story, I'd be right there. "Please, oh please, pleeeease! Please tell it!" And ever since I learned how at 5, I've been reading almost any story I could get my hands on. I know I've read hundreds of books over the years, many of them a hundred times. (OK, so that's definitely an exaggeration.) I think I've mentioned before about how hard it is for me to pick favorites...of anything. Books are no exception. Have you read the list of "Favorite Books" in my blogger profile? It's longer than anything else on that page. And it keeps growing. I hope it always will.

Then there are all the stories in my head. The ideas that come to me, set off by the most random things. Thoughts that can't be ignored. Those that beg me to tell their story. Even if it's only to myself. I can't get away from stories.

And I would never want to. Because I want to live in light of the greatest Story of all. And it's not just a story; it's real.

More real than I could ever imagine.

SPRING!!!

It's here! It's really here!!!!

I was not one of the many people in my house who were lamenting (more like complaining, which is more annoying in my mind) about the cold weather and longing for spring over the last few weeks (months?). I'm a knitter, guys, I love winter. (About as much as I love all the other seasons. ahem.) Frankly, I could have handled a few more weeks of winter. Maybe I could have knit a dent in my sweater queue. Now that spring's here I probably won't pull out the sweater I started to swatch for until late summer. Not that I'm complaining, I have thirteen hundred other things I want to knit. I'll be fine.

Besides, who would complain about such delicious weather like we had on Monday?!?! That day was almost idyllic. (I can't believe I used that word properly in a normal sentence. Yes!) It was around 70 degrees out and I was knitting with the breeze wafting through the window. Then I hear that some people are going to Dairy Queen because they are giving out free cones. I managed to get shotgun, which meant I spent the whole drive there and back with the beautiful breeze blowing on my face (And hair, which is a really romantical feeling-put that in for you, darling Sharyssa). And while Mom and the younger kids were eating their cones inside, some of us went for a walk halfway over the bridge while we ate our ice cream. (With the beautiful breeze blowing as before.)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.......

Happy Belated Birthday to Grandpa Kuhr!!!!

My Monday

I had a pretty good day. OK, scratch that, a great day. I got a good amount of schoolwork done. (At this point in time that means I did ~3 lessons of math-it's pretty easy stuff-and a Physical Science experiment. I'm waiting for holds from the library about female Civil War spies so I can start my research paper. That will be fun research. Plus, I got a fictional book that was related to the topic "just for fun".)

I also spent some of the day being super happy about the contents of the season 5 finale of Downton Abbey that aired last night. I said to Khyrstyn today over chat, "I think I was satisfied enough to pretend that I can wait a whole 'nother year for the next season..." Besides the fact that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. starts tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I'm super excited about that.

I swept the kitchen floor today! That doesn't seem like something that you would mention as a good part of your day on your blog, but it was the first time I had done it in a few days. Which meant that it took a lot longer than usual, but looked waaaay better after I had finished.

And tonight, Grandma B and her friend Nancy came over for supper, and Nancy brought us Italian beef from Portillo's. Oh my gosh, it was delicious. Just delish. And afterwards, Mom and I went over next door and played Bridge with Grandma and Nancy. They taught both of us last week. Mom has been wanting to learn how to play Bridge almost her entire life, so I thought it was pretty cool to be able to learn at the same time she did. Though part of the reason was because she wanted to be able to eat bridge mix...

Psychology and I + Randomness

Josiah had a psychology assignment where he asked several different age groups the same set of questions. This is how he went about asking me (while he was at school, over chat on Gmail):
Josiah White

Josiah White
Oh, well the assignment it is for is due tomorrow...
OHMYGOSH
So, yeah, now would be great.
Rebekah White
You are ridiculous
Josiah White
That is exactly what Ashleigh would say. *(:*

Anywhoo, I thought you might find it interesting to read mine. I was able to read the other's, which were quite informative, insightful, and yes...interesting.

1. How does middle age differ from other ages?
Lots of things change. If you have kids, they grow up and move out. They might have kids and then you'd have new people in your life. You start growing older, maybe declining in health.

2. When do you think a person becomes old?
60-70 years old.

3. What has been the best period of your life so far?
My late teens.

4. Do you (or did you) look forward to retiring?
Not really. I feel like I have my whole life ahead of me, and I don't want to miss it.

5. What major changes have you had in your life?
I haven't had very many major changes. I'm trying to think if there's anything major enough to mention. I've lived in the same area my whole life, and I haven't lost anyone who was really close to me.

6. What is the biggest motivating factor in your life?
Trying to live for God and His glory. Some would say my religion.

7. How important do you think romantic relationships are to overall happiness?
I think that most of the time happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy and content, even if things aren't going your way. So I guess I would say that they are important, but not the most important thing.

8. Do you spend more time thinking about your past or your future?
I think that's a toss-up. I spend a lot of time thinking about both.

9. What are some of your biggest fears?
People close to me being seriously injured or dying. Losing any of my senses or my hands. That would be awful.

10. What qualities do you look for in friendship?
Someone who's funny and kind, who cares about others, and loves God.

Look guys, I wrote an I-have-something-to-say post right after my spur-of-the-moment, I-don't-know-what-I'm-saying post!
