Lessons from Eric Carle

They say you learn something every day:
Grandt was reading 'The Very Busy Spider' (Hence the post title: Lessons from Eric Carle) while I was eating breakfast, and once he got to where the pig asks the spider to roll in the mud with him, I learned that it is best not to try to 'oink' like a pig while you are eating something. It wasn't that bad this time, but I'd hate to feel what it would be like if you really tried...

Plus, here is a video of Joseph scooting on a Frisbee:

Average Monday

Yesterday, I played Offertory for Church, and I messed up worse than I've ever done on anything I've 'performed' or done in front of people. But I'm happy with how I did, because I was playing it in three different keys, and that's what messed me up. Ironically, I messed up where the words said: (From 'Come to Jesus') 'Remember when we walk sometimes we fall'. :)

I got my package of yarn today:
Just wait til you see the cool socks I'm going to make from this. Link. They're going to look really nice with the thicker stripes.
I finished my school already, and the Baffas are coming over to have a tea party with us soon. Mmm!

Excited!

I'm so excited because I'm almost done with a Christmas present that I started on Tuesday. (Which is amazing, since the other presents that were about that size took a month.)

So I've been knitting a lot today, and I received a package in the mail from a giveaway that I won. It was a ball made out of twigs filled with alpaca. You're supposed to hang it on a tree so mama birds can pull the alpaca out to use it to make their nests. But, as I told Josiah and Katherine, I love alpaca fiber more than I love baby birds, so I'm keeping the fiber. Josiah already spun some of it for me, although he says I'm heartless...

About Julia

Last night we watched Soul Surfer for Anna's birthday, the movie based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, whose arm was bitten off by a shark and then she went on to become a professional surfer. After the movie, Julia walked up to me and said, "I do NOT like the blood!"

Today, I was getting her dressed and I asked her if she wanted to wear a light fleece striped shirt. After considering it, she decided, "Yes, because it's a sweater-shirt; I like sweater-shirts."

School Day (And Knitting)

I finished my school before lunch today!! Albeit, lunch was at 2 o'clock... Plus, I did my algebra today, which I hadn't done since October 8.

I've done as much knitting on Christmas presents in the last 4 days, as I did in 24 days earlier. Yay!!! Maybe this is feasible...

Birthday Greetings!

Hurray!:

Happy 10th Birthday Anna!!!!!

I'm happy too, because I had some of a white chocolate latte and chocolate long john from Dunkin' Donuts. Plus, I got the first draft of my weekly paper done! Don't worry, Sharyssa, it's not a short story about frontier life. I stuck with the Bill of Rights.

Back to Regular Programming...

For school today, we read George Washington's Farewell Address. He talked at length-among other things-about the evils of factions, or political parties, which is interesting to read in light of the upcoming elections.

I have 38% of Christmas presents done. Yep, and Christmas is in two months. Ay-yi-yi!!!!! But I've started the next present immediately after I finished the last one, and I've worked a good amount on that one, so I'm not going to get mad at myself.

I've done about half my school, so I better finish up this, so I can finish up that.

Last of Favorite Posts

This one will be a culmination of two posts, the first from May 3, 2011:

My Sister, The Prankster

Last night I was sitting in my closet engrossed in the new knitting magazine I received in the mail earlier that day.

Katherine came in and said, "Rebekah are you going to bed soon?" Now you, after reading the title knew she was up to something, but I didn't. I just replied, "Yes."

"Rebekah, it's almost ten thirty."

"Okay, I'll be done soon."

So after finishing it, I got up and put it away along with the yarn catalog I was looking at on the bookshelf. Then I walked to my bed, trying to avoid the things on the floor, and sat down. I put my glasses away, and then I crawled in under the covers.

I pushed my feet down under the covers, but they only reached half-way. I pushed again, then realizing someone had short-sheeted my bed, I reached at the top of the bed, and pulled the top of the sheet out from under the mattress, while saying to Katherine, "Was it you? It was you wasn't it?"

"Why not?" She said.

I am glad she did it to me, because I wasn't that mad about it, I thought it was funny!! I had just been thinking the other week of who I could do it to...

And on the side, I finished the last of history, for the whole year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Except Finals, of course. :)
And several days later on the 6th of May 2011:

Anna, Mary Ann, and Grandt, Interviewed

Here is my post about my other two sisters. I interviewed them!!!!!! Grandt wanted to be interviewed too, and he produced my favorite answer of all. Well, here it is:

Reporter Rebekah: Tell me something about yourself.
Anna: I am 8, going to be 9 October 25th. I like doing stuff with yarn.
Mary Ann: I'm 6. I'm going to be 7 September 13th.
Grandt: I'm 5.

Reporter Rebekah: What do you like to do for fun?
Anna: Crochet, knit, and color.
Mary Ann: Color, making books.
Grandt: Go outside or go on the computer.

Reporter Rebekah: What have you been doing a lot lately?
Anna: Crocheting a dress for my doll. I just learned how to ride a bike a week ago.
Mary Ann: Math and handwriting.
Grandt: Going outside a little (yittle) bit.

Reporter Rebekah: What's your favorite part of the day? Why?
Anna: Around 10 (in the morning), when we do Peacemakers (Our devotion time).
Mary Ann: In the morning when the sunshine's up, and it's bright.
Grandt: The morning. Because you can go outside more often.

Reporter Rebekah: What's your favorite thing about school?
Anna: I like Math.
Mary Ann: Math and Handwriting.
Grandt: Crafts.

Reporter Rebekah: What was your favorite part of this week?
Anna: Sunday when we went to the park and the Baffas came to our house.
Mary Ann: Sunday, cause we went to the park with a bunch of our friends.
Grandt: When the Baffas came.

Reporter Rebekah: If you were interviewing me, what is one question you would ask me?
Anna: What do you do most of the day?
Mary Ann: I would show you a picture and ask, "Does this look good?"
This is the last and my favorite answer:
Grandt: Can I ask something like Mary Ann's? Not the same (assuredly).
I'd show you a picture and say "You're welcome," if you said, "Thank you!"

#4 of My Favorite Posts

Before I post this next favorite posts, I wanted to tell a story:

Friday afternoon Mom asked me if I had a small gift bag she could use.

"For what?" I asked.

"A gift."

So I got the one that had been sitting in my closet for a while, and thought, Yes! I'm finally getting rid of this.

I gave it to her and later that night at supper, she said, "I have a gift to present...in honor of Rebekah's 500 posts on her blog." Of course, she handed me the bag that I had given her, which was pretty heavy.

But that's not all! I started to open the gift, and I saw some pennies. "Oh my gosh!" I said.

"What?" Dad asked, before I pulled out a couple bags and rolls of pennies, 500 in all.

I spent the money on shipping for some sock yarn from Knit Picks.

And.....Here's the post, from April 29, 2011:

How My Little Sister Is Like Sharks

Disclaimer: This isn't a bad thing. My little sister isn't mean like sharks, this is about how she is like them, not that she's identical to them.

In biology, we learned about sharks and how they have an electric recognition system, that helps them find prey. Here is a short article about it on Wikipedia.

Julia has what I call an 'ink recognition system'. We have a fair amount of pens in our house, we just can never find them. Except Julia. Every time you look at her she has a pen in her hand. And she can get pretty upset if you take it away.

That's how my little sister is like a shark.

#3 of Funny Favorite Posts

From December 6, 2010:

I am now happy to give you a post that is actually worth reading and is fairly long, too.

This morning, I came downstairs to eat breakfast. I wanted to have a bowl of Honey Crunch 'n Oats and I couldn't see the box anywhere. I asked, "Where's the Honey Crunch 'n Oats?"
So Mom announced that we were not going to have wheat today and that I couldn't have any Honey Crunch 'n Oats. I was rather chagrined and started saying why I should be able to have the cereal (I am tired of writing said cereal because it takes too long) to no avail. So I sat down and had a bowl of Rice Krispies.
Mom said we could have a glass of orange juice for breakfast.  We were all rather excited about that since we don't usually have juice for anything except medicine, but we were still rather upset about the no-wheat thing.
Josiah claimed that Mom gave us the juice to boost our morale after the whole no-wheat thing. Well you see, I was eating my Rice Krispies when he said that and it made my milk go up my nose. I proceeded to say that having your milk up your nose hurt more than water or pop and that it rather fogged up your nose. Then I sneezed and discovered that not only my milk went up my nose but also my Rice Krispies.
Now I am telling you this to warn you against listening to something funny while you are eating Rice Krispies. Because if they go up your nose, believe me it doesn't feel good.

Other things I have learned in the past few days that don't feel good are:

  • Stepping on a zipper
  • Jabbing your leg against the corner of the end table

That's today's. Monday's next...

Another Funny Past Post

Waaaaaay back on February 11, 2011 (The 11ths must be funny days...):

A Terrible Day and Some Comic Relief

So, why is today a terrible day? Well, for school we are learning some about monks, and how they made vows of silence. So for school, one day this week we can't talk. And you guessed right, it's today. The only thing that makes it semi-bearable is I can write and sign (language). But not talking is even worse than not eating. I am NOT going to mention eating biscuits, bacon, and cheese all day. I want to forget that day. But I digress... It's been a terrible day and it's not even noon. Aauugghh! At least, I can write on here.

Well lately, there have been some funny things said (and done) around here, so I thought I would put them on this post for comic relief.

Funny #1:
I was talking about Mrs. Joy, from our church, and I said, "she was like a kid in a candy shop, just full of joy." Then Stephen and I both laughed at the same time and said, 'full of joy. Ha ha!" then we paused for a second and both of us said, "Great minds think alike!" (At the same time, mind you)
"Oh, that's creepy, that's too creepy," Josiah said.

Funny #2:
Julia fell by the nightstand. When Stephen asked what hurt her, she pointed to the book, 'Resources for Caring People'.

Funny #3:
Julia was looking at cliff notes for Dante's The Divine Comedy: Inferno, and she drew a question mark after 'Comedy'. I guess she didn't know that in the Roman times a 'comedy' meant that no one died at the end, not that it was funny.

Well, that's it for today. I hope at least you had a good day!

As I wrote on our dry-erase board for all to see, "I didn't know I talked so much in one day"
There you have it. Come back tomorrow for another funny post...

1st of Some of My Favorite Posts

I decided to go back and pick the earliest one that I really liked.

Way back on December 11, 2010, I wrote:

26 out of 32 presents done!!!!!! Only six more, yeah!

Tonight Dad is going for the PADS night shift and so he was resting on the couch so he could be awake tonight. And yes, I wrote was resting.
I was putting away Mom and Dad's laundry when I saw Katherine coming out of their bedroom with a look of shock saying, "There is a hole in their ceiling." And she tried to tell Dad but he must have not heard. And I'd have to admit that I wasn't very surprised. Until she said it was leaking. Whoa! I said to Dad, "There's a hole in the ceiling." He didn't look very surprised or ready to get up, so I tried again, "It's leaking."
I never saw Dad get up off the couch so fast! He quickly said, "Where?"
"Your room," I replied and he headed straight for it. Right now, it is not fixed and Dad is trying to decide what to do.
But I felt like I had to put this on here with, "The moral of this story is, 'If you ever want to get your dad off the couch, tell him the ceiling is leaking.' Of course, if it's not true you aren't going to be in a good situation."

That's it for today. Come back tomorrow for another of my favorite posts. It will probably be funny, because I'm like that.

Ecstatic

Mrs. Greene told me today that she found my Christmas piano piece. I was pretty excited and glad that I was going to have my lesson today instead of having to wait until Thursday. Plus, a Christmas piece, and, well, most people know that I love anything Christmas, and, hey, I like playing piano as well.

Besides, I've liked the pieces Mrs. Greene had picked out for me before. Then I heard that it was a medley. I like that.

But then...

I heard that it was a medley with Canon in D throughout. I literally screamed with joy. I LOVE Canon in D.

Logically, I love my new piano piece. :)

Apple Heaven

We've greatly benefited from Apple Butter Day here. Eating apple butter all day long, along with leftover pizza, plus Josiah made some delicious Alfredo sauce with noodles-no, it didn't have apples in it.

Johnathan made Apple Crisp for breakfast, which was delicious...

...and...

...Apple Pie!

Q&A

What have you been doing today?Helping with Apple Butter Day.

Wasn't that what you were doing yesterday?
Yes, but today at one point I thought I was truly helping.

Why is that?
Because I was doing something I didn't really like to do. :)

Which was...?
Holding a tent pole in the pouring rain while the lightning crashed around. It was wet out there, and since the tent had a flat roof, the rain sometimes came down in waterfalls. That's not nice if you're standing under it, especially if you get it in your sleeve. Suffice to say that the ends of my sleeves were wet. :)

Riding and Cleaning

We're down at Grandma and Grandpa's house today (we drove down this morning) and we've been helping get ready for Apple Butter Day.

It was beautiful driving down because of all the colorful trees. I'm so glad we went this morning instead of last night so we could see them better. We got to watch the vice-presidential debate too. I like watching the debates while I knit. Speaking of knitting, I've gotten a lot done yesterday and today. Well, I need to get off so I can help do work...

Joseph in Pictures

I've been busy today, so I'm posting a bunch of pictures. I didn't even take them, Johnathan did.

Smart Julia

Julia's been saying some pretty cute things that I wanted to record:

Mom has a dress shirt that has large black 'jewels' around the collar. Julia told Mom her collar "looks like a necklace!"

I asked her if she wanted to hear something really disgusting: "Uh...No!" she replied matter-of-factly.

She told me, "Those pants are cute." She said that she especially liked the design on the pocket.

When I told her that she ran so fast that she got halfway to her destination before I could tell her to come back, she laughed and said, "I ran like a robot!"

I was getting her some Emergen-C today because she has a cold, when she informed me, "I used to think blue was pink, but blue is not pink. Blue is blue, and pink is pink, and orange is orange."

Long Trip

Some of us had a long trip today: Riding in a car for four hours. But almost all of us had a displacement of zero and thus a velocity of zero. Even though we rode fours hours. It was worth it to me. I got some knitting done, and some mint custard and french fries out of the deal. Thanks Grandpa!

We've been watching and quoting this video of the Travelocity gnome introducing their Great Gnome Nabbing Contest. Right now, I don't care about winning a trip around the world, but I find the video absolutely hilarious.

Happy and Cheerful

That's me right now. Because...

I finished school lonnnng before suppertime (which hasn't happened for a few days).

and...

I worked a good amount on some Christmas presents yesterday. Which is good because I haven't been doing that much lately. I'm not sure why, because every time I get back to it, I realize that I was missing knitting all that time.

But I keep doing it. I'm so silly.

Bells Are Ringing...

We went to the wedding of some friends from our church today, now Jarryd and Bethany Hawley. I enjoyed the ceremony and reception.

I really liked Bethany's dress, and the little flower girls and ring bearers were so cute! I also loved hearing the speeches by the maid of honor and the best man.

A Picture Post...

...to show what's happening here. I will give some explanations too.

Hey! We got a good one!

I just couldn't resist...

The Pocahontas Museum the younger kids put together. I love the 'Coming Soon!' sticker.

If you click on the picture to see it bigger you can read the explanation of this exhibit along with the other pictures.

The whole museum.

Julia was in charge of this exhibit to explain, "Pocahontas' Baby Thomas!" Say out loud for fun, it sounds cool!

Julia wanted me to take a picture of her like this.

Where's My Brain?

I need to find some content to write. After school, I feel like I don't have a brain to use to write on my blog. But what's the point of writing if I don't have anything good to say?

Most days I just start writing until I figure out something to say and then erase what I had before. It usually works, but I am so tired right now, maybe I should have just skipped writing entirely.

Unless you find this interesting...

Nothing like some shopping...

...to make a lazy day better.

Grandma B took me to Lindy Gertie's for lunch today and I had a very delicious hamburger and mint ice cream. Then we went to Wal-Mart to get some jeans for myself.

That was the best part of my day. Unfortunately, the rest was very lazy and full of school, when I wasn't being lazy. :( I still have to finish my physics, so ta-ta!

It's October

Fall is upon us with the colorful leaves and the blustery winds and I think this cold weather is deliciously crisp and fresh. Corn Fest is behind us, but I'm looking forward to the rest of Autumn: Apple Butter Day, and the Fall Festival for our church, and Thanksgiving. Maybe I shouldn't mention that yet, it's a little early. But I can't help looking forward to all these wonderful things and that's half the fun isn't it?

Getting back into school is nice in the fall too. Today we read Patrick Henry's famous speech, Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!, and Longfellow's Ride of Paul Revere, both of which I love to read. Though this is the first time Henry's speech has thrilled such a patriotic spirit in me...I'm not sure why I thought it a little boring before.

Soup and Fried Flatbread

Today Katherine was supposed to make cheddar chowder but she was sick so some of us helped her. Johnathan and I had a cheese shredding contest-whoever could shred a block of cheese the fastest wins. I lost, but Johnathan stopped the timer soon after I did (he went first), and so I'm not sure by how much. I just shredded the rest of it slowly. It didn't seem like much time through when a muscle in my upper arm started throbbing and it took a lot of willpower to keep shredding. I didn't know it could be so painful!

Mary Ann also made some dough today that the kids had made once before for school because it was Navajo flatbread, and we had some fried for lunch. It is quite tasty.

I still haven't finished my school today :(-though I've finished everything that's due tomorrow. Still need to do physics and algebra. Hopefully I will get it over with soon so I can work on Christmas presents. I am being extremely lazy with them.
